Monique Auffrey, CEO

When women and children experience the trauma of domestic violence, they need support, understanding, safety and an opportunity to heal. Monique Auffrey’s great passion is creating the supportive environment that brings healing to women and children and builds safe and secure communities, free of domestic violence.


As the CEO of Discovery House, Monique is a trusted national leader in the non-profit sector and a significant contributor to international advisory Boards. Monique sits on the Alberta Family Violence Death Review Committee and was invited to participate in the National Housing Strategy Round Table in Ottawa. She is the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Organization of Social Workers and an Advisory Board Member of the Global Institute of Social Workers. As a published author, Monique’s work influences policy on social work, housing and homelessness.


Numerous awards and recognition have honoured Monique’s work. She was named a Finalist for both the prestigious Western Legacy Awards Sustained Contribution honours and the influential Social Venture Partners Fast Pitch Competition. Monique was the recipient of a global social work scholarship and she has been profiled as a CTV Inspired Albertan.


Monique completed her Masters of Social Work degree at Dalhousie University in 2003, receiving several awards for her commitment to social justice, human rights and bettering the lives of women and children. Monique’s early career began in Halifax in progressively responsible positions of social worker, master field worker, crisis team worker and Executive Director at Family Services of Support. This lead to a move to Alberta in 2013, where she joined The Alex Community Health Centre in Calgary as Program Manager. She also initiated a successful transformative change management program.


Monique joined Discovery House as Director of Programs in 2015, overseeing Canada’s first Housing First program in the domestic violence sector as well as the shelter program for women and children. Monique has brought her dynamism and passion to the role of Executive Director since April 2016.


Discovery House is a non-profit organization managed by a Board of Directors who are responsible for guiding the agency’s vision, ensuring adequate funding, and developing timely, relevant policy.
